Vines growing at Villa Regina, Boscoreale. May 2006.

These have been planted in the same spacing as original Roman vines, the white casts of which can be seen to the right of each vine.

According to Jashemski, she found approximately 300 cavities that appeared to be vines, 195 of stakes, and forty-six that were unable to be identified.

There were also thirty-four tree-root cavities, most of which were in the vineyard.

Carbonized almonds and olives found helped to identify some of the trees.

The vines, informally staked, were supported both by stakes and trees, as is true in many of the local vineyards today.

Villa Regina, Boscoreale. 1980. North side of site. Ash layers in the cut made for the excavations.
According to Wilhelmina, in 1981 “Professor Sigurdsson, a volcanologist, visited our excavations and he pointed out that, in the new cut that had been made to prepare the part we were to excavate, the stratification of the fill that covered Boscoreale was clearly visible and quite different than at Pompeii. First there was a substantial airflow of pumice up to a thickness of 1.45 meters. Next came a brief ground surge made up of coarse pumice.”
