According to Wilhelmina:
“Stefano De Caro, now director at Pompeii, took us to see the farm building of this villa rustica and the land immediately surrounding it which had been declared a permanent archaeological zone. He asked us to excavate the limited area that he had prepared. This was the first time in the entire Vesuvian area that an opportunity had arisen to excavate farmland attached to a villa. We started work the next day.
Almost immediately a path was discovered, but it seemed strange that its orientation was different from the villa. There were ruts in the path left by a cart.
Many root cavities were found of differing sizes. The cavities were cleaned, measured and the casts made in a few days. The casts were painted white, and discs were painted to mark the locations of the vines, so they would show up well in Stanley’s photos. The land had been planted in a vineyard, with the occasional tree.
Stefano said he would have more of the farmland ready for us to excavate in the following summer. And he did.”
“Later that summer, Stanley and I went back to Boscoreale, and found that in the space prepared for us, in the back of the villa, the vineyard continued.
The vines were informally planted. Some were staked, others were attached to the small trees found throughout the vineyard.
We also found more carbonized grapes and seeds.”
