This
painting is described as a “Crouching male with serpent”, height 95cm x 1.13m
width (37” x 45 inches).
A
nude male figure, in a most precarious position, is shown half-kneeling as if
recoiling from the advance of a serpent.
On
his right outstretched leg, a live serpent tightens its grip around the man’s
bare flesh. With a staff in his left arm, it is supposed that he is charming or
controlling the serpent. This depiction of man versus beast would have been
seen with strong sexual undertones in the villas at Stabiae. An identical
fresco was found on the west wall in the south-west corner of the same room.

Described
as a “Woman in white tiered dress”, height 1.2m x 99 cm width (47” x 40”
inches).
This
fresco shows a female clothed figure in white multi-tiered gown standing
upright with her right arm gracefully outstretched and her left arm holding a
laurel branch at her side. Her head is adorned with a tiara of beads and/or
flowers and she is looking off into the distance.

This
