HGW24 Pompeii. December 2006. Doorway to small room to the south of peristyle, with window onto south portico, in north wall of room.
(Villa Diomedes Project – area 2 with doorway and window to area 14.)
(Fontaine, room 2,13).
From PAH 1,1, p.260-1, 26th October 1771, and addendum p.124 and 157: (see No. 27 below, on plan by La Vega).
We are continuing the excavation in the same house, and have found a side room to a peristyle, which was entirely painted but in a bad state and very worn out.
The floor mosaic was white with a black band all around, and in the middle an intermingling formed of various triangles and by a circle, the whole with black mosaic.
In this room were found a terracotta water-pitcher/jug, a bronze door-bolt/latch, five heads of nails of the same metal, and an iron hoe.
Also found in the same room was a marble table with its foot, but being very ordinarily worked and mostly broken, it was left in-situ.

We continue to excavate in the usual house outside of the city, where we have found a room with various grotesque architecture with a red background, and amongst these were painted carts with instruments inside, and baskets of fruit and more. We found in this room, and the other: 3 door hinges, two hinges, and one almost entire lock, all made of bronze.
Of the fish-pond, or fountain in the middle of the garden, we have lifted the lead pipes and 8 bronze mouthpieces, the largest part united to the same piece of pipe.

(Fontaine, room 2,10).
The main bedroom, the doorway towards the right, (Villa Diomedes Project – area 17.) (Fontaine, room 2,12.), but not photographed yet) had an apse with three windows built out into a garden, one window facing west, south and east.
According to Fontaine –
On the east wall, the painting is partially badly damaged and unable to be recognised.
In the middle the major zone is a 50cm wide and 40cm high field, filled with modern plaster.
There, when the excavation was carried out, the central vignette, now in the Louvre, with the griffins drawing the Chariot of Apollo was cut out.
To the left, another cut-out field of about 33cm squared. Here the central vignette representing a panther of the side panel was removed.
The most noticeable is still the painting on the south wall, which like the north wall, is divided into two fields.
In the middle remains of a narrow, yellow-white architectural view.
Underneath, in the base, the trace of a square on the corner.
The yellow ornamental border with a palmettes decoration is well preserved in the left wall panel.
To be found today in the Louvre, the middle image of the left wall field with the Chariot of Diana, was cut out, and the 40cm x 50cm wide area is filled with modern plaster.
The west wall shows only a simple white plaster in the south-west corner which abuts against the red plaster of the south wall.
In the north-west corner, it partially covers the green corner strip of the red background decoration of the north wall.
According to Jashemski, this garden (she called it “d”) has not yet been excavated.
See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. New York: Caratzas. (p.281).
From PAH 1,1, p.258, 14th September 1771, and addendum 122-3 and 157: (see No. 23 below, on plan by La Vega).
We are continuing the excavation in the usual dwelling outside of the city, and in a room of the same we have found the following –
Bronze, 2 candelabra, …….etc, Iron, Glass, and Bone (for detailed list see PAH 1,1, p.258-260)
Addendum p.124 reads – This room was painted gracefully with paintings of fishes, stripes/bands with comedy griffins? (fascetti con de’scherzi di grifi) and others, painted on a yellow background/plaster; the zoccolo/plinth was well decorated with vases/pots and others on a red background/plaster; the floor of this room was white mosaic, with two black mosaic stripes surrounding it, and with circular figure (e di figura circolare).

Lifting portions of soil in the rustic courtyard of the same dwelling, we have found two sheets of lead, each (approximately 0.40m long by 0.35m), which would seem to have been situated in two corners of the roof that covered the portico of the said courtyard, used as gutters.

We have freed the peristyle of the said dwelling, where we have already exposed all around the portico that was covered by a roof supported by columns, that are a little different from the Doric, made of brick and covered with stucco partly white and part coloured red.
Between the columns of the same portico, we have found the mouth of the cistern, with its travertine puteal decorated with fluting, which had been well used over time, having been worn around by the rope, with which they would have been drawing the water.

We have entirely freed the peristyle, where we have detected another cistern mouth with its travertine puteal similar to the other, which was found in the past week. A basin/tub faced with marble already taken by the ancients was known to have been in the middle of the part discovered of the courtyard, and here was found a sheet of lead used as a channel in the corner of the roof; and nearby to a small cupboard were found two bronze hinges, and inside a small iron hinge, and a piece of bone flute.

According to Boyce, six steps lead down to the servants’ quarters, and in the wall beside this stair was a “piccolo larario”.
This was apparently only a niche, in which a statuette of Minerva was found.
See Boyce G. K., 1937. Corpus of the Lararia of Pompeii. Rome: MAAR 14. (p.97, no.476).
Another niche, with a painting of the figure of Fortuna with cornucopia and rudder, was reported as being found in the Villa.
See PAH, I, I, 273, dated May 1, 1773. However, the location was uncertain.
PAH says that it was in the entrance to a courtyard with a small room, and there was a painting of Fortuna in a small niche in the same room.

From PAH,1,1,p.253, 23rd March 1771 and addendum 120: (see La Vega 7 and 8)
We have been continuing the excavation in the dwelling outside of the Gate of the city, and have found:
(No.8 on the La Vega plan): A statue of woman all draped signifying a Minerva, holding a shield with the left hand, and a plate with the right hand; she had a helmet on her head, and was approximately 0.20m high, and in a bad way.
According to Pagano & Prisciandaro, the statue was missing its right hand, and the inventory number was NAP 5284.
