According to Wilhelmina –
“Against the east side of the fountain we found the cavity left by a large tree. The two carbonized chestnuts found in the lapilli in the south-east corner of the garden, at the height of the ceiling beams, probably fell from a branch of this tree. The sundial in the north-east corner had no doubt become useless as the large tree shaded the garden”.

According to De Caro, a group of four centaurs were found under portico 33 on 17th February 1970.
When they were found, they were very badly damaged.
Heads and limbs were mostly detached and it was necessary to provide patient and pain-staking work of re-composition.
See De Caro,
S.1976. Sculture dalla villa “di Poppea”
in Oplontis (p.198) in Cronache Pompeiane, II, 1976, (p.184-225).
(Note: according to the description card below – these may have been discovered from the “north-west portico of the pool”).

Found under Portico 33 on 17th February 1970.
Two centaur fountains would have been displayed on each side of the central passageway in the north garden.
There was no evidence of pipes, so they had not been used as fountains in their final location. Photo by Stanley A. Jashemski.
